On Monday 1st May Alan and I drove to Brackley in Northamptonshire for the start of a day of ringing organised by Diane Hooper from St James, Shirley. Much to our surprise and delight, when we arrived we saw a troop of Morris dancers. As we had arrived quite early we stopped and watched the dancing for some time as it was most entertaining. The weather forecast was for rain, but fortunately it was fine except for a light shower in the afternoon. Our ringing began at Brackley on eight bells (13cwt tenor). They seemed heavier than Yardley bells, but we enjoyed ringing Stedman triples. Greatworth (6cwt 6) were our favourite bells of the day as they were light and very easy to ring. The first three were cast in 2004 by Whitechapel. At midday we proceeded to the Inn at Greatworth for a hearty pub lunch. The food was simple and good and the service was excellent. We travelled to Helmdon (10cwt 6), Moreton Pinkney (6cwt 6), Eydon (9cwt 6) and finally Byfield (12cwt 8). The day was most enjoyable with lots of interesting things to see and as usual the time went very quickly. We had a vote of thanks for Diane who had arranged the day so efficiently. We then said our goodbyes and headed for home.
